Arthritis Myths

Myth: Arthritis is just wear and tear on the joint. Inflammation in individuals with high Body Mass Index (BMI) has been found to contribute to accelerating arthritis. Arthritis has been found in the hands of obese individuals as well in the load-bearing joints like the hips and knees.

Myth: Knee replacements are inevitable. Knee replacement is an individual decision to make after consulting with a doctor. Joint replacements can increase the quality of life and reduce pain and lifestyle management has also been shown to help with decreasing pain and increasing physical function.

Myth: You can’t kneel after a total knee replacement surgery. Kneeling should be prioritized as a physical therapy goal once the appropriate healing has taken place and there is a range of motion to support kneeling. There is no evidence to suggest there will be dislodging of the prosthetic or any negative ramifications from kneeling. IG post reviewing the research.
