Before my exercise classes at the senior living facility, I go around to the rooms and recruit people for the class. I knock on the door and most of the time they yell out “come in!” and I pop my head in and remind them about exercise class. A few of the residents get up to answer the door. The people that get up to answer the door are also people that use the stairs at the facility. These are the residents that typically come to my more advanced, parkour-based, balance and stability class. It’s a chicken and the egg question: Are they taking the stairs and answering the door because they are more able-bodied OR are they more able-bodied because they have a history of prioritizing moving their body? The little things are the big things and when we make an effort to move our bodies throughout our day (it doesn’t have to be exercise class) we maintain the ability to move.
