The “3 Macronutrients” of Happiness
Arthur C. Brooks, the author of “From Strength to Strength” was on The Drive podcast talking about the three “macronutrients” necessary for happiness.
Enjoyment: Pleasure plus elevation. He uses the example that eating is pleasure but eating with loved ones during the holidays is elevation.
Satisfaction: The joy and reward of a job well done. It’s very fleeting and it’s not that we can’t get no satisfaction (in the words of the Rolling Stones) but it’s that we can’t keep no satisfaction.
Purpose: The meaning of life. Why were you born? For what are you willing to die for ?If you don’t have those in balance and abundance you will be unhappy.
He also discusses how relationships, spirituality, and managing our wants also contribute to our happiness. It’s an excellent episode to reflect on what truly matters in our lives.
Why Alzheimer’s Is Referred to as Type 3 Diabetes
It’s believed that Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is caused by the brain’s inability to use glucose. Type 2 diabetics have an increased risk of AD and those that develop AD have been referred to as having Type 3 diabetes. High blood sugar causes inflammation that damages brain cells and can lead to AD. This is an indication that AD is a lifestyle disease and we can reduce our risk of getting by AD by staying metabolically healthy.
